Build the data infrastructure that Vision 2030 runs on

Senior Data Engineers are in sustained demand across KSA and UAE — the most consistent hiring signal in the GCC market right now.

Every AI initiative in the GCC sits on top of a data infrastructure build that is, in most cases, still in its early stages. Senior Data Engineers with genuine depth in Spark, Kafka, Airflow, dbt, and cloud-native architecture are in sustained demand across government, financial services, energy, and telecoms. This role category has the most consistent hiring signal across both KSA and UAE — and the clearest salary benchmarking, which means cleaner offer conversations for candidates.

Why this is the most consistent hiring signal

Data infrastructure is the prerequisite for everything else. AI agendas, BI modernisation, regulatory reporting, customer 360 — they all stall without senior data engineers who can build platforms, not just operate them. Almost every meaningful organisation in the region is hiring at this level, and most have been for the last 18 months.

For candidates this is the cleanest market in the GCC right now. Benchmarks are well established. Counter-offers behave predictably. Most clients are well-organised by interview stage 2.

The state of data infrastructure across sectors

  1. Banking — most major UAE and KSA banks are mid-migration from legacy data warehouses to lakehouse architectures. Mix of Snowflake, Databricks, and sovereign cloud alternatives. Mature data governance teams. Long delivery cycles, but clean engineering.
  2. Government — variable. SDAIA-aligned entities in KSA and the Abu Dhabi government family are typically 18–24 months into modernisation. Other entities are earlier in the curve. Expect more on-premises work and sovereign cloud constraints than in the private sector.
  3. Energy — Aramco and ADNOC operate at a scale most candidates underestimate. Streaming, IoT, time-series — genuine engineering depth required. The work is technically demanding and the packages reflect it.
  4. Telecoms — stc, e&, du. Mature engineering organisations, increasingly product-led. Strong appetite for senior hires from international product companies.

Why on-prem and sovereign cloud experience matters

A common mistake from international candidates is assuming hyperscaler experience translates cleanly. It does not. Data residency requirements, regulator-approved cloud zones, and in some cases on-premises sovereign infrastructure mean the architecture conversations look different. Candidates who have worked across hyperscaler, on-prem, and hybrid stacks are heavily preferred — and command a meaningful premium over candidates whose entire CV sits inside one cloud provider.

If your experience is hyperscaler-only, the move is still very doable. Frame the gap honestly in interviews and you will typically find clients receptive — most are aware that the candidate pool with on-prem experience is small.

Mid vs Senior — which is right for you

The mid-level band (5–8 years) is where the volume is. If your background is strong execution against a defined data platform, this is where you fit. The Senior band (8–15 years) is where architecture and platform ownership begin — fewer roles, longer interview processes, larger packages. The jump from Senior to Principal here is smaller than in the US market and usually flows through a Head of Data Engineering route rather than an IC ladder.

What candidates underestimate

The depth of governance work. Most GCC data engineering roles carry real responsibility for data quality, lineage, and access control — not just pipeline reliability. If your previous role kept these concerns inside a separate governance team, expect to own them here. The flip side: governance work in the region is increasingly well-tooled, and exposure to it is becoming a differentiator on a CV.

You're a fit if

You have 6+ years building data platforms at scale — not just running pipelines. You understand data governance, know how to work with on-premises and sovereign cloud infrastructure, and have delivered across multiple stacks rather than a single tool set.
